About Captain Pillowbelly

These are the adventures of Captain PillowBelly, who sailed the world, made loads of friends everywhere, tasted all kinds of delicious foods.

Every story takes place in a different city or a different country where he spends the day, meeting friends, playing games, doing sightseeing or eating food.

As an old sailor he always carries his red pillow under his jumper and usually falls asleep in his hammock at the end of the day – which makes his adventures prefect bedtime stories for children between 2-6 years.

We had the pleasure to travel the world, which means all of Captain PillowBelly’s adventures are based on real places, mostly on real people, local food and mostly our memories.

But why is Captain PillowBelly a Koala?

There are actually a few reasons for that:

  1. Koalas are obviously from Australia. Unfortunately Australia was one of the countries with very restricted border controls during the COVID pandemic. We thought it would be nice to do something related to Australia to welcome them back to the rest of us in the ‘post-COVID’ world. Moreover Australia was also last country that we visited as a family before COVID started.
  2. The adventures of Captain PillowBelly are bedtime stories and Koalas love to sleep. They sleep up to 20 hours per day. What would be a better fit?
  3. Koalas have their comfort zone and mainly eat one food: eucalyptus. That sort of resonates with a lot of toddlers. At least our children have their favorite foods and when they are going to unfamiliar places or meet new people they are always a bit shy in the beginning. Absolutely normal and completely fine. But Captain PillowBelly was created as an adventurer who explores new places, meets new people and tried a lot of new local foods. We hope that the Captain PillowBelly stories will also trigger your child’s curiosity to try out new things.

Bedtime stories:

While they are babies, the main goal was always to make them sleep through the night. Once that initial sleep training was completed and they are sleeping through (more or less), the next challenge starts: Putting the little ones to bed. We have all been there. At the end of the day, most children are exhausted, but they can’t settle down and refuse to go to bed. Usually that’s the time of the day where they start talking like little waterfalls and share all the stories from their day, what they have experienced, what they learned or what they don’t understand. With our Captain PillowBelly stories we want to follow this process of reviewing the events of the day. Each story will start in the morning and there will be new adventures, new places, new food, new vocabulary and much more on a daily basis. Each story will end with a very similar ending. This ending will signal the children that it is time to settle in, close their eyes and start sleeping.

One of the best things about traveling with Captain PillowBelly is the chance to meet new friends along the way. Whether it’s fellow travelers, friendly locals, or even some of the exotic wildlife we encounter on our journey, there’s always someone new to chat with and learn from.
